Safety Tips

Beware of Stale Green Lights

If you approach an intersection from more than a block away, and the light is staying green, you should be prepared to stop. Most red lights are set to last for about 45 seconds. (The red lights are longer at an intersection which has multiple turn lanes.)

Have patience and handle the long red

In the 1970s, the 45 second traffic light wait was typical. Starting in the 1980s, at some intersections, the wait started growing and grew still more in the 1990s. Today, a 90-second wait is common, and some are closing in on the three-minute mark. Quoted in the Wall Street Journal, an official who chairs an engineering committee on traffic signals says the time has crept up so gradually that no one noticed. That is, not until it was discovered that some reds are actually four minutes long. Blame the increase on traffic and wider streets that have to include lanes for left turns.
